Which Garden Trends Are Popular This Year?
Summer is now upon us, and it’s time to get outdoors and flex those green fingers. But which garden trends are popular this year? The team at Properly love a bit of gardening and have been keeping on top of the latest designs and looks in London! Now we’ve come up with the five key garden trends for summer 2022.
1. Energetic Colour Is On Trend
Vibrant colours are very popular this summer. For years, muted and pastel tones have been the go-to palette, but this year, they’re being widely replaced by bolder plant choices. Daring hues like reds, purples, and oranges are in style for 2022, with canna, crocosmia, and salvia being especially popular. Combinations like oranges and yellows are on-trend for this summer, giving gardens a modern aesthetic.
2. Drought Tolerance Is Being Prioritised
More people than ever before are worried about climate change. With predictions of more droughts in the future, there has been a move towards a Mediterranean planning approach with demand increasing for drought-tolerant flowering plants, especially ones that are known for attracting bees. Lavender, verbena and perovskia are becoming firm favourites.
3. Gardens Are Hosting Additional Living Space
With house prices still increasing in London, many homeowners are keen to find ways to extend their living space, and one way of doing this is to use their outdoor areas. Outdoor kitchens, living and dining areas, and children’s play spaces are popular options. Comfortable outdoor furniture, pizza ovens, sunken fire-pits, and patio awnings have all become must-haves for this summer.
4. British Grown Plants Are In-Demand
Gardening supplies are becoming more expensive, with the price of plants going up by around 13% over the past year. This has led to a higher demand for British-grown plants, and the result is a rise in the number of back-garden orchards.
Red produce and apples are a strong focus for summer 2022, with pomegranates and chokeberries being two exotic fruits that are being introduced to British gardens. Traditional vegetable patches are also re-emerging around the country, with keen gardeners trying to reduce their carbon footprints by growing their own produce.
5. Nature Gardens Are Being Created
Fitting in well with the drive for eco-friendliness, many gardens this summer are moving towards a more natural look. Wildlife gardens with an immersive feel are popular, and sustainability is a keyword for green-fingered homeowners everywhere. Wildflowers, ponds, and hedgerows are on the rise, while the drive to use peat-free plants is also high this year.
The Benefits Of A Beautiful Garden

London Youth work to improve the lives of young people in London, challenging them to become the best they can, and last year helped over 27,000 young people through their sports development, youth action and involvement, arts and outdoor education programmes and employment prospects. We feel strongly that all young people should have an opportunity to develop themselves, and so are delighted to be able to support London Youth in their work, providing young people with access to opportunities they might not otherwise have had, to learn new skills, to make a positive change in their communities and to shape the city they live in.
Glass Door helps homeless men and women in London through their large network of emergency shelters and support services. These winter shelters provide a warm welcome, food, safety and shelter for up to 170 people every night. Properly feels passionately about the issue of homelessness. That is why we are delighted that together with our clients we can assist Glass Door in their fantastic work to help some of the most marginalised people in society.
Families become homeless for reasons we can all identify with. We are concerned about people who are struggling to keep things together in our fast-paced world – and we care about those who have no support. We chose the Doorstep Homeless Family Project because they are passionate and effective yet they are a small team with limited funding. They provide homeless families, living in temporary accommodation in London, with access to services to secure the emotional and practical support they require to enjoy a better quality of life.
We need nature and nature needs us. We support The London Wildlife Trust because we share its concern for the environment. We want to ensure that we keep nature in mind as we work in the property market – and crucially, with people’s homes. We also want our employees to engage with nature and benefit from the wellbeing this brings. London Wildlife Trust cares for over 37 of London’s spaces, and their vision is: “a London alive with nature, where everyone can experience and enjoy wildlife”.
Mariel & Michael have been amazing, very thorough, helpful and a delight to deal with, would highly recommend! Thank you both.
Had Michael round for a valuation of our flat – very knowledgeable and friendly and wasn’t pushy at all. When it comes time to sell we’ll definitely be giving Properly a call!
Both Michael and Mariel were extremely helpful with our questions going forward whether it be regarding referencing or the property itself. Definitely not the usual estate agent experience (in a good way) and I would recommend Properly to anyone.
Mariel and Michael have been absolutely great, by far my best ever experience with an estate agent. Properly is honest, upfront and friendly, responding really quickly to any and all queries and with a lovely personal touch.
We had such an easy and stress free move. Michael helped us with all our questions and was quick to find out any answers to our questions. Would highly recommend.
Mariel helped me sell my apartment in West London. She was always there when I needed her. Her advice was invaluable and made everything a whole lot easier. I can’t recommend her highly enough.
We had the opportunity to interact with Michael of Properly in our search for a new rental flat. Michael was professional and courteous in our dealings with him. He was a pleasure to interact with and he frankly stood out amongst all the agents we interacted with over a search of several weeks.
We did not feel rushed at all which was great as it really allowed us to really take the property in. We did put down an offer and Properly did a great job in securing a good outcome for both the sellers and ourselves. If you are looking for an agency that will do more than just open the door then look no further.
