Moving out of London to the countryside is a big decision. It can mean you have less access to work and entertainment complexes, but it can also lead to a slower pace of living where you are more in touch with nature. If you’re thinking about moving to the country, here is our list of pros and cons to consider before you make the move.
What are the Cons of Living Rurally?
1. Limited Work Opportunities
Many people view moving to the country as a retirement option since job opportunities can be more limited than if you live in a city. If you’re not retiring, considering how you will get to work is an essential factor about where you move to. Choosing a home near a train station may be best if you plan on commuting.
2. Access to Leisure and Entertainment
Many rural locations have an abundance of leisure facilities, but it’s unlikely they will be as close to your home as they would be in a city. Days out at the cinema, gym or shopping mall may require a much longer drive than you are used to.
3. Distance to Shops
Rural living still means you will have access to convenience stores. However, depending on where you move to, supermarkets may be few and far between. You may need to drive long distances or rely on small local shops for your produce. If you prefer to get your food shopping delivered, it may also be more expensive.
4. Ease of Travel
Travelling around can be much more difficult in rural areas. Country lanes without pavements are common in many rural locations, so you may need to drive everywhere instead of relying on walking or public transport. The impact of this is significant to consider if you have children.
What are the Pros of Living Rurally?
1. Access to More Wildlife
Living rurally usually means you have more access to local nature reserves and forests. Plus, most homes in the country have gardens that are full of wildlife, so you can expect to share your garden with deer, badgers, rabbits, hedgehogs, foxes and other nearby wildlife.
2. Less Stress
City living is known to provide a more stressful environment for many people. Moving out of London and living rurally with greater access to nature, wildlife and the countryside is often associated with a slower pace of life and less stress.
3. Increased Privacy
Many homes in the countryside are more spaced out than homes in the city. Your nearest neighbour could be at the end of your street or another mile away, which can mean you have more privacy in your garden with no nearby houses overlooking yours.
4. Better Value for Money
Generally, properties in the countryside offer more for your money than a home in the city. Since rural living is considered ‘off the beaten track, you can often live in a larger home with a bigger garden for a smaller budget. This is a major consideration for people moving to the country.

London Youth work to improve the lives of young people in London, challenging them to become the best they can, and last year helped over 27,000 young people through their sports development, youth action and involvement, arts and outdoor education programmes and employment prospects. We feel strongly that all young people should have an opportunity to develop themselves, and so are delighted to be able to support London Youth in their work, providing young people with access to opportunities they might not otherwise have had, to learn new skills, to make a positive change in their communities and to shape the city they live in.
Glass Door helps homeless men and women in London through their large network of emergency shelters and support services. These winter shelters provide a warm welcome, food, safety and shelter for up to 170 people every night. Properly feels passionately about the issue of homelessness. That is why we are delighted that together with our clients we can assist Glass Door in their fantastic work to help some of the most marginalised people in society.
Families become homeless for reasons we can all identify with. We are concerned about people who are struggling to keep things together in our fast-paced world – and we care about those who have no support. We chose the Doorstep Homeless Family Project because they are passionate and effective yet they are a small team with limited funding. They provide homeless families, living in temporary accommodation in London, with access to services to secure the emotional and practical support they require to enjoy a better quality of life.
We need nature and nature needs us. We support The London Wildlife Trust because we share its concern for the environment. We want to ensure that we keep nature in mind as we work in the property market – and crucially, with people’s homes. We also want our employees to engage with nature and benefit from the wellbeing this brings. London Wildlife Trust cares for over 37 of London’s spaces, and their vision is: “a London alive with nature, where everyone can experience and enjoy wildlife”.
I was very impressed with the service I received. Communication throughout was very good. I have dealt with many agents, but the clear, concise and personable approach I received made Properly stand out. I wouldn’t hesitate to use them again.
I cannot recommend this estate agent enough. Michael and Mariel have been very good to us throughout the process and have made sure everything has been as smooth as possible. They have gone above and beyond to ensure everything was dealt with and in a timely manner too. A great experience throughout!
We did not feel rushed at all which was great as it really allowed us to really take the property in. We did put down an offer and Properly did a great job in securing a good outcome for both the sellers and ourselves. If you are looking for an agency that will do more than just open the door then look no further.
Mariel & Michael have been amazing, very thorough, helpful and a delight to deal with, would highly recommend! Thank you both.
We had such an easy and stress free move. Michael helped us with all our questions and was quick to find out any answers to our questions. Would highly recommend.
Had Michael round for a valuation of our flat – very knowledgeable and friendly and wasn’t pushy at all. When it comes time to sell we’ll definitely be giving Properly a call!
We had the opportunity to interact with Michael of Properly in our search for a new rental flat. Michael was professional and courteous in our dealings with him. He was a pleasure to interact with and he frankly stood out amongst all the agents we interacted with over a search of several weeks.
I was so pleased to be introduced to Properly. Mariel and Michael provide an excellent service that took the stress and hassle out of finding a tenant. They were a pleasure to deal with, efficient and fast. A marked difference from the hidden costs and poor communication often encountered from other high street estate agents. I would thoroughly recommend and happily use again!
